| Customer Reviews: A Must Have For Any Large Subwoofer April 19, 2010 Steven E. Hollingworth (Hemet, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Okay I'll admit it. I fully bought into the concept of using a SubDude/Gramma with hardwood floors. Isolating a sub or any speaker from a hard surface makes a huge difference. That makes perfect sense to me. And I bought into the concept of apartment dwellers using a SubDude/Gramma to somewhat reduce issues with downstairs neighbors. All of that makes perfect sense. But my home has a concrete slab, topped with 5/8" of good carpet padding, topped with some fairly luxurious carpet, so who needs a SubDude? Well last week curiosity got the better of me and I picked up a Great Gramma and after a bit of wrestling got it under my huge SVS PB12 Plus/2 subwoofer.
I am now officially a true believer. The PB12 Plus/2 has been described by professional reviewers as an "earthquake in a box". It's still an "eathquake in a box" but that deep bass just seems much soother, more natural and better defined. Instead of sounding like deep powerful bass coming from a beast of a subwoofer that deep rich powerful bass is just there - disembodied - with no attention drawn to the sub. Seamless and transparent but just as strong. I'm impressed enough that I just bought the smaller SubDude for the little subwoofer in my master bedroom.
The only downside to the Gramma/Great Gramma is appearance. Auralex makes the HD version of the SubDude as a slightly more attractive version for home use. There is no "home" version of the Great Gramma. It has that slightly scruffy look of professional audio gear. That's okay I can live with that. It's worth it for the improved sound.
Great Gammas are GREAT! June 29, 2009 Melissa E. Davis (Seattle) I started with the subdude, gamma, mopad: and now I have all gear, including the rack, on Great Gammas. What an amazing change these made in my listening environment. Unwanted bass harmonics and resonance are gone, the mid-range has cleared up, and even with mid-range receiver (due for replacement) is producing sizzles, tophats, and triangles as never before heard from this unit. I use a space between two Great Gammas for routing the power cables, and subdudes over the crack to prevent the signal cables from getting close. A space between the Great Gammas and the wall provides a conduit for the power cords.
I live in an apartment with carpet over concrete floors (note those of you with sound rooms in basements). I had no idea how much sound wave energy was being communicated through those floors and producing standing waves.
Very highly recommended and likely would improve any system for a pittance of upgraded equipment, speakers, or cables,
the bed of the monster July 1, 2009 Jason (Corpus Christi, TX) I purchased this after a research i've done about eliminating the vibrations in the wall of my apt. The bass of my 15" MFW is rocking my apt. even the cops showed up to my apt.....so I purchased this and the sound of the bass of the monster is more solid and the vibrations is gone
Great Gramma Review March 13, 2009 Pete W. Collins (Hollywood) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used this immediately based on several reviews I've read all over the web. It does reduce bass coupling. I think it really cut the bass way back almost too much. I think that my amp does sound better overall and use it daily in an apartment setting. It helps keep my neighbors happy (knock on wood!) That's about it.
